Background info:
Hotaru was the daughter of Souichi and Keiko Tomoe. Her father was a professor. When she was very young, she went to visit her father's lab, but an explosion killed her and her mother. At this time, the Death Busters, supporters/minions of the evil being Pharaoh 90, appeared and the professor sold his soul to them so that he could save his daughter. He turned Hotaru into a cyborg, reconstructing her damaged body with synthetic wires and joints and such, and an evil being "Mistress 9" took up residence in her body.

Hotaru grew up completely unaware of Mistress 9's presence. She was shy and her body was fairly weak, which is probably due to Mistress 9 and the cyborg-ness of her body. She got tired very easily and would sometimes have "attacks", during which she became dizzy and gasped for breath. As a child at school, the other children would generally avoid her, because she had a strange ability to heal things. There are times when her personality will suddenly change, and she'll do weird things, but when she returns to normal she doesn't remember any of it. As such, she spent most of her time at home, and began collecting lamps.

Her home life was pretty complicated, too. She lived with her father, who by now was a maniac, and his "lab assistant" Kaolinite, in a huge mansion. Kaolinite was one of the Death Busters, working for Pharaoh 90. She was not terribly sympathetic or kind towards Hotaru. Thus, Hotaru resented Kaolinite and at one point shouted that Kaolinite was not part of their family. Souichi, on the other hand, seemed to like having Kaolinite around.

Hotaru met Chibiusa one day when Chibiusa lost her hat on the wind. Chibiusa ran to retrieve it, and met Hotaru. They became friends after this, and though Chibiusa received many warnings to stay away from Hotaru, she persisted in her friendship. Around this time, the Outer Senshi also discovered that Hotaru was, in fact, Sailor Saturn. They wanted to kill her stop her from awakening, because the awakening of Saturn would mean the end of the world. Usagi and Chibiusa try to search for another way, and when they go to find Hotaru, Mistress 9 is taking over Hotaru. She takes the Ginzuishou/Silver Crystal from Chibiusa and completely turns into Mistress 9.

Mistress 9 tried to seal Hotaru away inside, but Hotaru fought back because she wanted to save Chibiusa. At this time, the Sailor Senshi were battling against the Death Busters. Mistress 9's goal was to bring Pharaoh 90 to Earth, from the Tau Ceti Star System. In the battle between Hotaru and Mistress 9, Hotaru manages to break free. She awakened as Sailor Saturn and destroyed the Tau Ceti Star System with her Silence Glaive, using the attack that could basically destroy the world, Death Reborn Revolution.

After the battle, Hotaru was reborn as a baby. Her father was killed in the battle, so the Outers take care of her and disappear for the time being. Hotaru grows up quickly, a precocious child with no memories of her previous life. In contrast to her previously withdrawn personality, she is quite cheerful and high-spirited. When she's playing violin, she sees visions of the past, for example, Chibiusa.

One night when young!Hotaru is taking a bath, Sailor Saturn appears to her and restores her memories. Hotaru suddenly grows up to about 11 or 12 years old. She and the Outers rejoin the Inners in the middle of a battle. After that, the Sailor Senshi fight as one team, not as two that are semi-working-together.

Since the defeat of Galaxia, things have been quiet, and Hotaru is pursuing her wish to become a nurse.

In Avoria, her powers are dimished to the point that she cannot even become Sailor Saturn. She still retains a small amount of healing power, enough to heal a papercut or a scratch but not much else.
